What do the digits on a hinge mean?

BS EN 1935 classifies single-axis hinges with an eight-digit code. Six-digit codes belong to closers. A supplier quoting six digits for a hinge has copied it from the wrong page.

The positions, in order: category of use, durability, test door mass, fire door suitability, safety, corrosion resistance, security, grade. Four of them decide whether a hinge belongs on a fire door. Position 1 at 4 is severe duty. Position 3 at 6 is a test door mass up to 120kg. Position 4 at 1 is suitable for fire and smoke doors, subject to assessment in the specified assembly. Position 8 at 14 is grade 14, 200,000 cycles at 160kg. Position 3 catches people out. A 54mm FD60 door with a vision panel and a kick plate is heavy, and hinges rated against a 60kg test door will pass a showroom and fail a corridor. On fire and escape doors the Guild is specific: severe duty, grade 12, 13 or 14.

How much force may a door take to open?

BS 8300-2 caps it at 30N at the leading edge, from closed to 30 degrees, and 22.5N from 30 to 60 degrees.

Force is hard to read at the door edge, so it may be measured in line with the handles, up to 65mm from the edge, with the figures increased by up to 2N. Backcheck preferably not before about 80 degrees. Maximum closing force between 0 and 15 degrees. The same door has to shut itself against a latch, smoke seals and any pressure difference. Where one closer cannot do both jobs, the route is a swing-free or hold-open device, or a power operated door.

How wide, and how much contrast?

800mm clear straight on. 825mm at right angles to a route 1200mm wide. 1000mm for external doors in buildings used by the general public.

Clear width is not door width. It is measured at 90 degrees or more, to the first obstruction on the hinge side, which can be a projecting lever. A 925mm door in a 1000mm opening can still fail. Contrast is measured in light reflectance value. Door furniture needs 15 points against the face of the door. The widely quoted 30 points applies to surfaces and handrails against their surroundings, and 70 points to lettering against a signboard. Applied to a lever, 30 rules out a great many sound specifications.

What goes in the door edge?

An intumescent and cold smoke seal set, sized from the door's own test evidence rather than from a rule of thumb.

More is not safer. A seal wider or thicker than the tested arrangement is a change to a tested assembly, and the assembly performs as it was tested. Gaps are typically 2 to 4mm. The lipping, the gap and the seal are one detail, not three. One item can do two jobs. Where a door is held open into a corridor, its leading edge has to contrast with the face. A contrasting seal at least 15mm wide, set in the door edge, answers the fire requirement and the accessibility one at once.

How is a schedule structured?

Part A lists every door once. Part B holds the hardware sets. A key chart and quantity totals sit behind both.

Part A carries door reference, location, door size, door type, hand, fire rating, set reference, quantity and notes. One row per door, counted once. Part B writes each set once and applies it to every door that carries it, with the standard against each line, so the evidence travels with the specification instead of sitting in a folder. Handing conventions differ between practices and manufacturers, so the schedule states the one it uses rather than assuming it. Every draft is dated and revision numbered against the drawing revision it came from, which is what makes a cost per door hold. No British Standard fixes the column headings. These are ours. Which standard covers which item?

Hinges, BS EN 1935. Closers, BS EN 1154. Hold-open devices, BS EN 1155. Door coordinators, BS EN 1158. Locks, BS EN 12209. Cylinders, BS EN 1303. Levers and knobs, BS EN 1906.

Escape hardware splits by who is behind the door: BS EN 1125 panic hardware where the public is, BS EN 179 emergency exit hardware where the users are trained. Power operated doors, BS EN 16005. Timber fire door assemblies, BS 8214. Accessible buildings, BS 8300-2. Escape route signing, BS 5499-4. Code lengths differ, which makes a quick sanity check: 1935 has eight digits, 1154 six, 1906 eight, 1125 and 179 ten, 12209 eleven. Levers are the exception to conformity marking. BS EN 1906 is not a designated standard, so a UKCA marked lever handle does not exist. Where a supplier tells you otherwise, it is worth asking what else they have misread.
