What the door does when the power fails

Smart locks and access control from leading European manufacturers, from a single residential door up to multiple apartments or rooms in a commercial building: remote unlocking, fob or card activation, or an app based system.

On most projects, nobody owns the line access control sits on.

It falls between the ironmongery package and the mechanical and electrical package. The result is either two readers bought for one door, or none.

The boundary question

Ask it early and it costs nothing

So the first question on any job with electronic locking is a boring one: who is buying the readers, who is buying the locks, who is pulling the cable, and who is commissioning it.

Settle that at Stage 3 and the schedule can be written cleanly. Leave it and it becomes a variation.

The second question is what the door does when the system fails. Fail safe releases on power loss, fail secure stays locked. On an escape route that is not a preference, it is determined by the fire strategy, and it has to agree with the mechanical override on the same leaf.

Where a credential beats a key On a door that changes hands often, a fob or a card can be withdrawn in seconds. A key cannot, and a lost master key on a large suite is a replacement programme. Master keying and key control

Accessibility Door entry units go on the wall next to the door, within 200mm of the frame, at 900 to 1050mm from floor level, with an LED display. Digital locks are preferably lever operated. Accessible openings

Also supplied CCTV supply and installation, high security steel doors and frames, safes and key boxes.

Settle the boundary at Stage 3.

Who buys the readers, who buys the locks, who pulls the cable, who commissions it. Agree that early and the schedule can be written cleanly.
