Saying you are competent is no longer enough. Under the Building Safety Act somebody has to record why they were entitled to rely on us. Here is ours, set out the way we set out a specification, with the check route beside every line.

The credentials

Companies hold membership. People hold qualifications.
Verification set VS-01How to check any architectural ironmonger, including this one.
  1. COCorporate membership of the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers. Held by a company, never by a person. Full corporate membership requires at least one employee qualified to Stage 3. Ask for the membership class and number.GAIgai.org.uk
  2. INDThe DipGAI, the Guild’s Diploma in Scheduling. Held by a person, never by a company. Entered after the Foundation and the Certificate, then one academic year, assessed by a written examination that requires a complete hardware and access control schedule with a key control system. Ask which named individual holds it.GAIAsk for the name
  3. INDRegAI, Registered Professional. A separate and higher standing than the Diploma, requiring 20 CPD points a year. Holders are published, so this is the one credential you can check without asking anybody. Do check it.GAIgai.org.uk/registered
  4. COThe company itself. Proline (Sales) Limited, incorporated 15 April 1999. Trading history, filing history and registered office are all public.CHCompany 03753659
  5. COProfessional indemnity cover. Writing a schedule is design work, so ask for the certificate and the limit of indemnity, not just confirmation that cover exists.INSURERAsk for the certificate

Laid out the way we lay out a hardware set, because the principle is the same: the claim is worth nothing without the evidence beside it. Column two is whether it attaches to the company or to a person. Column five is where you check it.

Kevin RyanThe name at the top of a schedule is a person you can ring.

A company cannot hold a Diploma. A person cannot hold a corporate membership.

There is no such thing as GAI accredited, GAI approved or GAI certified. Where a supplier’s website mixes those up, it is worth asking what else it has mixed up.
