The door that takes no floor
A pocket door gives back the floor area a hinged door needs to swing through. On a small bathroom, an en suite, a utility or a walk-in wardrobe that is often the difference between a room working and not working.
The hardware on a fire rated pocket door is not a free choice.
Push plates, kick plates and pull handles have to come off the approved list in that system’s own test report. It is the item most often missed on a pocket door, and it is the one that invalidates the certificate.
The systems
Four, plus the flush range- Classic single
- The standard single pocket door frame. Quick to install, fits ten standard UK panel sizes, so it can match the other doors in the property.
- Single fire rated, FD30
- Independently fire tested and certified, designed for your own 30 minute fire rated leaf. Includes a jamb and architrave kit made from a high density slow burning hardwood, and a choice of white or brown intumescent seals. Compatible and certified for use with the BIAS soft-close anti-slam.
- Classic double
- Two leaves sliding into opposing pockets, so a room can be opened up or closed off without either leaf taking floor space when open. It can be built against an existing masonry wall by forming a false stud alongside it, adding about 100mm to the wall thickness.
- Double fire rated, FD30
- The Classic double frame with high density fire resisting jambs and architrave, supplied with the intumescent strips required for installation. The frame is 70mm and needs two layers of 12.5mm fireboard each side, giving a finished wall thickness of 120mm.
- Syntesis Flush single
- The flush system, which loses the architrave completely so the door reads as part of the wall.
On a fire rated system Non-essential hardware such as push plates, kick plates and pull handles has to come from the approved list in the test report. It is not a free choice, and it is the thing most often missed. Send us the leaf specification and we will check it against the report.
Wall build-up Get the frame depth and the board thickness agreed with the contractor before the studwork goes up. Retrofitting a pocket into a finished wall is not a small job.
